Case Study: From Design to Kickoff: How Wilmot Delivered Custom Modular Facilities Under Tight NCAA Deadlines
Table of Contents
When the Barton Malow-AECOM Hunt-Alexander (BMAHA) joint venture began work on the Beaver Stadium renovation at Penn State University, one of the most critical challenges they faced was meeting NCAA requirements for visiting team facilities during the 2025 and 2026 football seasons. The existing spaces were unavailable during construction, and NCAA regulations mandated that functional locker, shower, and coaches’ areas be in place before the first home game. Without them, Penn State’s opening game could not proceed. Adding to the challenge, the available installation area was located under the stadium structure, meaning all new facilities would need to fit within tight clearances and constrained site conditions.
Chapter 1:
The Challenge
The project required:
- Fully functional locker rooms, showers, training spaces, and coaches’ offices for visiting teams.
- Tight site restrictions under the stadium’s structural overhang.
- Strict NCAA and Big Ten compliance.
- A fast-tracked timeline—design, approvals, fabrication, and installation all needed to happen in a matter of weeks.
- Seasonal flexibility to remove and reinstall the buildings for the 2026 season.
Chapter 2:
The Solution
The joint venture turned to Wilmot Modular Structures to design, build, and deliver a solution that could be fabricated and installed quickly without sacrificing quality. Working closely with BMAHA, Penn State officials, and the Big Ten Conference, Wilmot developed a custom modular plan that balanced speed, durability, and flexibility.
The final design included:
- One 24’ x 64’ Locker/Shower Facility – constructed as four 12’ x 30’ modules, seamed together end-to-end and side-by-side on site.
- One 12’ x 60’ Unit – built from two 12’ x 30’ modules, seamed end-to-end.
- One 10’ x 44’ Support Building – providing additional operational space.
Modules were designed for tight clearance installation and configured for efficient internal circulation. Off-site fabrication allowed site work and building production to occur simultaneously, drastically reducing total project time.
Once fabrication was complete, modules were delivered to the stadium and assembled with precision to ensure perfect alignment and immediate usability. The interiors featured durable, high-traffic finishes designed for athletic environments, and layouts included dedicated locker areas, showers, training rooms, and coaches’ offices.
All designs received NCAA and Big Ten approval prior to installation, and the final project was completed one week ahead of the required deadline—ensuring Penn State’s opening game proceeded without delay.
